The History of High Plains Public Radio High Plains Public Radio was founded in 1977 for the expressed purpose of enriching the educational, cultural, and community life of the High Plains region. It is also dedicated to developing the self-identity of the High Plains so that the region might better appreciate its common heritage and build a sustainable future. It pursues this mission through public radio broadcasting because the medium is economical and accessible to nearly everyone. HPPR considers its programming to be radio for the mind and spirit, radio programming that features the best of what the world and our communities have to offer. It provides a stage for presenting news, information, discussion and music programming from across the world as well as a forum for regional issues and interests. Moreover, all of this programming is aired commercial free to maximize programming time and avoid listening interruptions. HPPR began broadcasting in 1980 in Southwest Kansas. Over the past 22 years it has incrementally expanded its service area through local initiatives and capital campaigns just like the KTOT effort. HPPR now serves Western Kansas, portions of Southeastern Colorado, the Oklahoma Panhandle, as well as the immediate Amarillo area. High Plains Public Radio recently welcomed the addition of the Top O’ Texas region to its listening area. |

Main Offices and TranslatorsHPPR's studios and offices are located in Garden City, Kansas and Amarillo, Texas. HPPR provides radio service to the region via six transmitters located in Garden City (KANZ), Hill City (KZNA) and Hays (KZAN), Kansas, Amarillo (KJJP), Bushland (KTXP) and Spearman (KTOT), TX and a series of translators throughout western Kansas; Guymon, Oklahoma; Washburn and Amarillo, Texas, and Lamar, Colorado. Staff and VolunteersHPPR's programming is produced by a staff of professionals and volunteers in a variety of on and off air capacities. Some of the program hosts have their play lists and interviews posted for your convenience. More playlists will be added as we get them.
