2016 Presidential Race Lacks Rural Focus

Shawn Poynter

With all the hullabaloo surrounding the 2016 presidential race, The Daily Yonder wondered why so little was being said about rural issues. The blog noted that only Hillary Clinton has released any version of a rural platform. In the face of so much silence, the blog asked several prominent advocates for rural life what they believed to be important in the election.

A farmer in Kentucky said we should rethink government incentives for unsustainable production. A professor at the University of Texas said the rural education platform should be framed around community development. He added that strong and healthy schools equal strong and healthy communities. And a rural health advocate noted that rural areas have greater percentages of uninsured residents and suffer from significant provider shortages.
