In Austin, a Community Comes Together to Provide Rides for One Another

In a time when technology so often seems to be tearing us apart, sometimes it’s nice to be reminded of how the internet can bring us together. The ride-sharing services known as Lyft and Uber recently left Austin in protest of strict local regulations about who could drive for the companies.

Once the Texas capital was left without these corporations, reports Business Insider, something interesting happened. A Facebook group known as Arcade City Austin / Request a Ride began to grow rapidly. The page allows users to request rides from other members, and requests simply that those using the service “be cool to each other.”

One man began driving a blind neighbor to work three times a week. Another driver recently got up in the middle of the night to pick up a young woman who seemed like she was in an “uncomfortable situation.”

No rules. Just people helping people.
