Can More Recess Mean More Learning?

OffGridQuest.com

More and more frequently these days public school teachers and administrators are withholding recess to punish student misbehavior. And parents have begun to protest the practice. But one Texas school is taking a different approach, reports OffGridQuest.com.Eagle Mountain Elementary in Fort Worth has been giving students two 15-minute recess breaks every morning and two 15-minute breaks every afternoon to go play outside. Despite the loss of class time, teachers say the kids are actually learning more.

That’s because they’re better able to focus in class and pay attention without fidgeting. Experts say recess is a lot more than just a free break for kids to play after lunch period. The unstructured time helps kids focus better when they’re in class.

The American Academy of Pediatrics agrees, calling recess “a crucial and necessary component of a child’s development.”
