Garden City is in national news. A reporter from USA Today came to the southwestern Kansas community talking with residents about the impact President Obama’s immigration plan would have. Some said it would allow undocumented immigrants live without the worry of being picked up by immigration officers. Some worry there will be an exodus as they look for better jobs in other parts of the country.
Either way, the change will be huge says LevitaRohlmanRupp. She’s the director of the Catholic Agency for Migration and Refugee Services. She’s already processed from than 500 people from the Garden City area in the president’s program.
The immigrant population has grown and shaped Garden City. Minorities are over 77 percent of the public school population.
A number of residents were interviewed. But, it’s the comments of Roy Dixon that have sent ripples through the area. Dixon’s comments have racial connotations reports the Garden City Telegram.
Dixon says his comments were taken out of context, and don’t reflect his views.
