If you ask people what they remember about Praxedix J. “Joe” Dovalina, you’ll probably get the story about 1992. Joe paid over $3,500 in back taxes so a resident could get the deed to her house back.
He also believed in education, volunteering at the Glenwood and Sanborn elementary schools.
“Education for our youngsters is basically the most important thing to me,” Dovalina said in an April 1991 interview with the Amarillo Globe News. “They are our future.”
He was the Potter County Democratic chairman, served on the Northwest Texas Hospital board, Wesley Community Center board, Amarillo College STAR program, and as Panhandle Community Services chairman. He volunteered and was chair of the executive board of the Hilltop Senior Citizens Center, was a member of the Amarillo Downtown Lions Club, and president of Los Barrios de Amarillo.
He was born in 1936 in Laredo, moved to Amarillo in 1955 while in the Air Force, and died in Amarillo at age 71. Dovalina is buried at Llano Cemetery.
