This weekThe Dodge City Daily Globe reported the remarkable story of Mabel Roberts Keller. Mabel crossed with her family into Kansas from Oklahoma in 1919. She was one of the last Kansans to arrive in a covered wagon. On September 28th, Mabel Keller turned 100 years old at her residence at Hill Top House in Bucklin.
Mabel was born in Red Rock Canyon, Nevada, in 1915. Her family moved a good deal in her early years, and they arrived in Barber Canyon for harvest season when Mabel was four. Mabel tells of two horses pulling the covered wagon, and two horses following behind. As Mabel grew, her family continued to travel looking for work. She attended 13 schools before dropping out in junior high to help with the family.
Mabel has five children and 10 grandchildren.
