It’s the time of year when deer/car collisions increase in Kansas and the Kansas Highway Patrol is offering drivers a few tips to keep in mind when encountering deer on the roadways.
As The Hays Post reports, almost half of the car/deer crashes in Kansas occur in October, November and December.
The Kansas Highway Patrol offers the following tips to avoid crashing with a deer.
One, watch for the rest of the gang, as deer are pack animals and rarely travel alone. If a deer crosses the road in front of you, it’s likely another deer is close by, so slow down and keep your eyes open.
Two, deer are most active at dusk and dawn, when vision is the most compromised so the KHP again advises drivers to stay alert and travel at slower speeds during those times of day.
Three, even though it won’t prevent a collision with a deer, wear your seat belt, as doing so can greatly reduce the risk of injury.
Four, stay the course, meaning if you see a deer, brake firmly and calmly and stay in your lane. Swerving could make you lose control of your vehicle.
