The State of Oklahoma is asking its citizens to pray for the oil industry, reports The Week magazine.  The statewide prayer initiative will culminate on October 13th with a special breakfast event in the capital, known as Oilfield Prayer Day.

Gov. Mary Fallin issued an executive proclamation to make the prayer day official. The governor’s statement read, in part, “Oklahoma is blessed with an abundance of oil and natural gas, [and] Christians acknowledge such natural resources are created by God.” Gov. Fallin went on to invite Christians to thank God for the blessings created by the oil and natural gas industry.

Rev. Tom Beddow of Ada, Oklahoma, coordinates Oklahoma’s Oil Patch Chaplains ministry. He supports the initiative, noting that the state’s economy is deeply tied to the oil industry.
