A recent poll shows voter support for retention of five Kansas Supreme Court justices.
As the Topeka Capital Journal reports, a survey from the Docking Institute of Public Affairs at Fort Hays State University shows 43 to 45 percent of those polled support retaining five justices up for retention in Tuesday's election, including Carol Beier, Marla Luckert, Dan Biles, Lawton Nuss and Caleb Stegall.
About 20 to 22 percent of voters polled opposed the justices’ retention and about 35 percent were undecided.
Campaigns for and against retaining the justices are in full force and those supporting retention of the justices claim Gov. Sam Brownback and some Republican members of the Legislature are behind efforts to oust the justices and politicize the court, while those opposing retention are expressing frustration at the court’s recent death penalty and education rulings.
According to the poll, 74 percent were either dissatisfied or very dissatisfied with Brownback and 57 percent were dissatisfied with the legislature.
For the presidential race, the poll shows Republican Donald Trump, with 47 percent of the vote, leading Democrat Hillary Clinton, who garnered 39 percent.
