March 5 to 11 is Severe Weather Awareness Week in Kansas and a couple of events are planned to ensure people are ready for severe weather.
According to the National Weather Service, a statewide tornado safety drill will take place at 10 a.m. central time on Tuesday and Finney County Emergency Management will be holding a severe weather/storm safety training Thursday.
The National Weather Service provides storm identification/spotter training sessions each spring in cooperation with area emergency management agencies.
The training is free and is open to the public and is scheduled to take place at 3 p.m. and again at 7 p.m. Thursday at the Finney County Fairgrounds Grandstand in Garden City.
According to Finney County’s website, anyone with a desire to learn how to identify severe weather is encouraged to attend.
The National Weather Service has also published an information packet that contains 2016 Kansas tornado facts, emergency sirens used in the event of severe weather, as well as information to increase severe weather awareness among the deaf and hard of hearing.
