In Some Rural Areas, the "Silicon Prairie" Continues to Grow

techcrunch.com

When people hear terms like “tech” and “startup” they generally think of cities like San Francisco and New York. But a “Silicon Prairie” has continued to grow in certain parts of the rural Midwest, reports TechCrunch.com.

This could be good news for areas in the heartland where population loss has been a real problem. Some states are turning to technology to fight back against the dwindling population trend.

For example, Red Wing, Minnesota, is home to a little over 16,000 people. The town is now home to Live. Give. Save. Inc., a financial tech startup that has created a mobile platform for boosting retirement savings through charitable giving. Once high-speed internet arrives in the heartland, rural areas can become an attractive option for startups tired of paying exorbitant city prices.
