Texas foster care alumni not using higher ed benefit

tpr.org

The Lone Star State offers high education tuition waivers for students who were in the foster care system.  But, it’s rare students take advantage of this opportunity according to a recent article from the Texas Tribune.

More than 49,000 students are eligible for the waiver program estimated an agency spokesman for the Texas Department of Family and Protective Services.  Last year only 3,700 used the waiver.

There are a number of theories why the assistance is not being used.  Legislators are taking a look at the program to see if a new approach is needed.

The program began in 1993.  To participate, students must take at least one college course by the time they are 25 years old to lock in benefits.
