Texas Nationalist Movement Hopes to Get Secession Measure on Ballot

The Texas Nationalist Movement is attempting to get a non-binding vote onto March’s GOP primary ballot over whether Texas should secede from the United States. To reach this goal, the Nederland-based group has been circulating a petition. The group’s aim is to obtain 75,000 signatures from registered voters by Dec. 1.

The Texas Tribune notesthat, even if the Texas Nationalist Movement gets enough signatures, such a vote would be little more than symbolic. Academics agree that Texas cannot secede from the United States. A post-Civil War Supreme Court ruling, Texas v. White, forbids such a move.

The group’s efforts have thus far only succeeded in irritating the Republican Party of Texas. The state’s Republican leaders don’t like outside groups setting the agenda.
