The Texas Nationalist Movement is saying they think they deserve a voice in the U.S. presidential debates, according to The Houston Chronicle.
The group cited a 2014 Reuters poll in which 24 percent of Americans supported the idea of their respective state leaving the United States. The nonpartisan Commission on Presidential Debates has set a polling floor for inclusion in the debates. Any candidate polling below 15 percent is not invited to debate. Ryan Thorson, a blogger for the Texas Nationalist Movement website, pointed out that secession movements are polling over that limit.
However, the Commission is using polling taken over the last several months to set their threshold. And the poll the Texas secessionists are referencing was taken two years ago. Jim Gaines of Reuter, who conducted the poll, responded that, “The small secession movements in a handful of American states today represent a tiny percentage of those polled by Reuters.”
