Texas Panhandle No Longer High and Dry

Amarillo Globe News

Half of the dry counties in the state of Texas have been in the Panhandle; however this number has dropped significantly over the past decade. The Texas Alcoholic Beverage Commission began tracking Texas counties that allow alcohol sales in the late 30’s, back then only 8 out of the 26 counties in the Panhandle were “Wet”.

Over the years that gradually began to change and in 2005 the floodgates opened and multiple counties turned on the tap. Amarillo Globe News reporter JC Cortez reported, “Today, only four of the 26 counties remain completely dry: Collingsworth, Hemphill, Roberts, and Parmer. Bailey County, just south of Parmer, is also dry, according to the TABC.”
