Texas Secessionist Movement Continues Its Push

The Texas Nationalist Movement made trips to 31 Texas cities last week to drum up support for the state’s secession from the United States, reports Reuters. The group is attempting to gather the necessary 75,000 signatures to get the question onto the primary ballot next spring.

A spokesman for the movement compared the effort to that of Scotland, which narrowly defeated a proposal to break away from the UK last year. A South Texas law professor noted one problem with the movement: In the Civil War, the states that had seceded made a solemn vow to never attempt the move again. However, if the measure were successful, Texas would have the clout to be a major player on the world stage. Texas’s economy matches that of South Korea’s in size.
