The Wheat Quality Council’s annual hard red winter tour began last week across the High Plains, reports High Plains/Midwest Ag Journal. The event was founded in 1938 with the goal of improving wheat quality in the US. The tour posted a record number of stops this year—and finished up with some good news. 2016 showed the best day one yield result in four years.

There were 20 cars on the Kansas tour, and they made a record 306 stops this year. They counted an average of almost 48 bushels per acre in Kansas, a 13 bushel per acre improvement over last year’s 35.

Nebraska fared even better, with an estimated yield of 55 bushels per acre. But Kansas had a better improvement, percentage-wise, as Nebraska only grew by 10 bushels per acre over last year’s totals. Colorado wheat showed an estimated yield of 39 bushels per acre, an improvement of two and a half bushels.
