When it comes to Abortion Accessibilty, the U.S. Falls Somewhere in the Middle

With all the turmoil surrounding abortion rights in this country, sometimes it’s helpful to take a global view of things. The Guardian reports that, when it comes to accessibility of abortions, the U.S. falls somewhere in the middle. For example, it’s easier for a woman to get an abortion in Texas than it is in Northern Ireland. In Greece, however, abortions can be carried out on demand up to a limit of 12 weeks.

The U.S. currently has a little over 200 abortions per 1,000 live births. That’s less than half of the number in the Russian Federation, which leads Europe. But far more than Poland, which has only two abortions per 1,000 births.

Laws in Texas are growing stricter, though. As clinics close, some Texas women are waiting up to 20 days to be seen by a doctor. If a new law is upheld, only nine or 10 clinics will remain in the state.
