Mary Chapin Carpenter's 'Songs From The Movie' this week on High Plains Morning

Mary Chapin Carpenter's new release is a re-invention of 10 of her classic songs, newly recorded with a 63 piece orchestra and a 15 member choir.

In talking about the process, Carpenter says “Singing with an orchestra is very different from singing with a band. I had to learn to ride the enormous wave of sound an orchestra produces but not over sing at the same time. Finding a quiet voice while still conveying strength was the way in.”

We will listen to 'Songs From The Movie' this week on High Plains Morning.

High Plains Morning Top 10 for 2013

I love lists-- all kinds of lists.

Best of lists, worst of lists, stuff you have to see/hear/do before-you-die lists.  I also love making lists, but that’s really hard for me to trim down my list to a manageable size.  Here’s my attempt at a 2013 list of some of the best things (in my opinion) you’ve heard this year on High Plains Morning.  This list is by no means complete, and it is in no particular order.

New Music from Tim O'Brien and Darrell Scott on High Plainds Morning

I’ve been reading reviews, blogs and various posts about Tim O’Brien and Darrell Scott’s new record(their 2nd together), and they all seem to say roughly the same thing: “Why did you wait 13 years to put this out?!”  It was worth waiting for; the follow up to their Real Time release in 2000, this collection is split down the middle with 5 tunes by Tim, 5 by Darrell and 3 covers, including John Prine’s Paradise, featuring John singing harmony.  We will listen to Memories and Moments this week on High Plains Morning.

'Foreverly' is CD of the week on High Plains Morning

It’s an unlikely combination, but a really cool idea. Combine the leader of the most successful punk band of the last 20 years, a superstar jazz artist and a classic album from the 50’s and you get ‘Foreverly’. Billie Joe Armstrong from Green Day and Norah Jones have re-interpreted/re-created the 1958 Everly Brothers record ‘Songs Our Daddy Taught Us’, a collection of traditional tunes. We will listen to it this week on High Plains Morning.

Amos Lee "Mountains of Sorrow, Rivers of Song" Takes New Path

For his fifth album, Mountains Of Sorrow, Rivers Of Song, Amos Lee has taken a different path for the recording; he worked in a new city(Nashville) with a new producer(Jay Joyce), and, for the first time, he brought his touring band into the studio with him.The twelve songs that resulted—the follow-up to 2011's chart-topping Mission Bell—bring Amos into new sonic territory, while retaining the impact of the scenes, characters, and stories we have come to expect from his songs. We will listen track by track this week on High Plains Morning, Monday through Friday from 9am to noon.
