elk hunting

Well, hello folks!

Today, I'm going to share a recipe that I made up in elk camp.

For the past five years, my friend Larry Large and I have outfitted elk and bear hunts on a ranch located in northern Colorado, not far from Wyoming’s southern boundary. This is rough, wild country and game is plentiful. It’s one of the few places that I know of with such a large population of black bear. Elk are always plentiful here and because we hunt during the September archery season, before snowfall triggers the resident elk to migrate to lower, warmer valleys, the animals are using their summer pattern of bedding in the black timber up high and moving into the valleys and lower elevations during the day to feed and water.

Howdy, Folks!  It's your old buddy, and do I have a story to tell you!  The week up here at elk camp, one of our hunters, Chris, was hidden, waiting for elk to come by, when he caught sight of a mountain lion about 12 foot away!  Yes, I said 12 foot!  Now, Chris was beside the trail, pretty well hidden, and the lion caught his gaze, then appeared to move away.  Chris remembered what he'd been taught, and watched for the lion to circle back, and that's exactly what happened.  Listen to Chris tell the story of the hunter becoming the prey.

Howdy, Folks!

We're all settled in up here in the Rocky Mountains.  We've been hearing the bugling, and seen some pretty nice herds, but so far, we've been unsuccessful.

This morning, one of the hunters missed a pretty good shot, but there will be another.

We're all back in camp, and I'm on the porch, talking with our Camp Manager Billy about the delicious breakfast he made.

Be sure and take a look at the pictures!

I'll be back with another story from the mountains and more pictures next week!

 Howdy, folks!

It's raining on the way to the mountains.  It looks like the end of the rainbow is our elk camp.  I'll be sending you audio postcards from the trip thanks to my son-in-law who got me one of those smart phones and showed me how to use it.  I'll be sending pictures too, so you can see what things look like up here.

Folks, this is going to be short and sweet because I am heading home from the Colorado mountains.  As many of you know, we have been up here at elk camp for almost a month, and this week has been suuum-thing.

Folks, I'm calling in from elk camp again this week.  The numbers of black bear again this year are just tremendous!  We've had some close encounters, and that's enough to make the hairs on the back of your neck stand up.

Folks, it's week two up here at Elk Camp, and I am having the time of my life!

Folks, I have to tell you, I have had enough of trying to teach Cindee to fish.  I'm headed up to the mountains of Colorado for the next three weeks for some peace and quiet.  My buddy Larry Large and I guide hunts, and I am looking forward to the trip.  Take a listen to the audio.  I called in and chatted with Cindee about a typical day in camp.  It might not be what you expect.  I'll be in touch.
