Symphony to "step out of the box" for concert "Reimaginings"

The Project Trio

In what may be called the apex of the symphony's vision to rejuvenate the traditional symphonic experience, the Amarillo Symphony's "Reimaginings" this weekend presents a concert full of reconception.

Project Trio, comprised of a string bass, cello and flute, joins the symphony, adding an eclectic flavor of musical styles to the concert.

Project Trio visits HPPR studio in advance of Amarillo Symphony appearance

Brooklyn-based Project Trio will be performing with the Amarillo Symphony this Friday and Saturday night at the Globe-News Center for the Performing Arts.

They stopped by HPPR studios on Thursday for a quick interview and performance. You can hear the interview and 2 performances above- the first piece is the trio's arrangement of Charles Mingus' Fables of Faubus, and the second is one of their own compositions entitled Raga Raja.

Interview with composer Adam Schoenberg

Untitled (Violet, Black, Orange, Yellow on White and Red), 1949, of Mark Rothko, an example of a piece by the artist which Adam Schoenberg used as inspiration for "Finding Rothko."

This weekend, the Amarillo Symphony performs "Finding Rothko," an orchestra work by composer Adam Schoenberg.  The relatively contemporary piece, written in 2006, will be performed next to works like Ralph Vaughn Williams' "The Lark Ascending" and Mussorgsky's "Pictures at an Exhibition" at the symphony's concert titled "Pictures in Music."

Adam Schoenberg joined me from his home in Los Angeles.  I asked him about the inspiration and process behind composing "Finding Rothko."
