Yesterday HPPR reported on how pregnancy-related deaths in Texas doubled in the year after the state cut funding to women’s health programs. Now, as the Huffington Post reports, Texas is just an extreme snapshot of the United States’ bigger maternal mortality problem.

Pregnant women are often treated terribly while in Texas jails, according to a revealing new story in The Texas Observer. Since 1980, the number of incarcerated women in the U.S. has quadrupled. But jails and prisons have often neglected the needs of pregnant inmates. 300 to 500 pregnant women are booked into Texas county jails each month. Dozens gave birth while in custody last year.


Texas democratic lawmakers have introduced two bills that would change health and sex education curriculum.  KUT News reported the bills are in response to State Bill 1- the bill restricting abortions.
