Rural Colorado communities with landfills are feeling the sting of a state regulation being mandated by the Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment.

As The Prowers Journal reported in August, two eastern Colorado communities were cited several years ago for landfill problems associated with record keeping and landfill operations, resulting in regulations that are costly for the sparsely populated communities to maintain.

The Colorado economy will continue to grow at a steady clip, according to state economic forecasts released last week, thanks in part to rebounding oil prices, but rural Colorado isn’t expected to benefit as much as other parts of the state.

Rabies cases are on the rise in Colorado this year.

As The Prowers Journal reports, the Colorado Department of Agriculture Animal Health Division sent out a release last week indicating the number of reported rabies cases in Colorado was on the rise in 2017.

Good news for veterans in Southeastern Colorado

There’s good news for veterans in southeastern Colorado.  The VA Medical Clinic now has a permanent location Lamar reported the Prowers Journal.  When the Prowers Medial Clinic closed over a year and a half ago, a mobile trailer was brought in as a stop-gap measure.

The Granada War Relocation Center, also known as Camp Amache, was a Japanese American internment camp located just south of US Highway 50 about a mile west of the small, farming community of Granada, Colorado.  It is an agricultural area with a semi-arid climate.  The Atchison, Topeka, and Santa Fe Railroad track lies just south of the camp.

Skies over southeast Colorado have cleared of the choking dust propelled by high winds, but the effects are evident.  Prowers County residents are dealing with the aftermath of fallen trees and dumpsters scattered like bowling pins.  More about the storm and its lingering effects are available from the Prowers Journal.

  At a recent Prowers County, Colorado, Commissioner meeting, The Prowers Journal reported unanimous approval was given to an ordinance prohibiting marijuana cultivation facilities, manufacturing facilities, testing facilities, and retail stores within the unincorporated portions of the county.
