Mental health took center stage last week in Amarillo, reports Amarillo.com. Two separate events attempted to bring awareness and improvement to psychological wellness in the Texas Panhandle. On Wednesday, health providers held a community mental health summit to discuss how to better serve panhandle veterans. Dr. Michael T. Lambert, chief of mental health services at the Amarillo VA Health Care System, was optimistic. He noted that the VA has been able to see 100 percent of veterans who needed assessment, and the VA offers same day access when necessary.
Meanwhile,in a separate event,more than 60 Australian bikers rolled into Amarillo to bring awareness to mental health issues. The event, known as the Black Dog Ride, was started by an Australian who lost his mother to suicide. The bikers are riding on behalf of mental health first aid, a treatment created and developed in Australia.
