Trump Selects Nebraska Rancher as Ag Chairman

Hoosier Ag Today

Donald Trump introduced the national chairman of his new agriculture and rural area task force last week. The chairman is a longtime Nebraska cattle rancher has been a personal friend of Trump’s for more than a decade, reports Politico.

Charles Herbster is the owner of Herbster Angus Farms and The Conklin Company, in Falls City, Nebraska. In 2014, Herbster considered entering the Nebraska gubernatorial race. He ultimately decided not to run because his wife was recuperating from heart surgery. In a radio interview Herbster explained that some of his focuses in a Trump administration would be rural development, growing the economy and re-negotiating trade deals.

The GOP released its new platform proposals at the convention in Cleveland. The platform suggests splitting food stamps from the farm bill, and also has sections on crop insurance and the dairy program. Some ag groups may not take kindly to these proposals, Politico noted.
